Acupuncture is a healthcare system developed in China over 3000 years ago. It is evidence based and supported by research (see fact sheet page).

Carefully selected single-use disposable needles are inserted into the skin in relation to patient sensitivity and area of the body being treated and remain in place for 20 minutes.   The patient will hardly (if at all) feel the insertion.  What may be felt instead, is a travelling current / stimulation almost like a vibration in the area being treated or surrounding it.  Some patients describe this as a nervy sensation.  It is not painful just different.

TCM Acupuncture treats the individual - it is holistic, i.e. it takes into account the 'whole' person - mind, body and emotions.   As a practitioner, I will look at your entire medical history including but not limited to; medication, life events and lifestyle and together with a tongue and pulse diagnosis will formulate a treatment plan.

Acupuncture point selection may change according to how the patient presents on a treatment by treatment basis.

Auricular (ear) Acupuncture

Auricular acupuncture is the stimulation of acupuncture points on the external ear surface for the diagnosis and treatment of health conditions in other areas of the body.   This is achieved by the use of either very fine acupuncture needle insertion into carefully selected points and left for 20 minutes and then removed.

Ear seeds (small seeds held in position on the ear with adhesive plaster/tape) ear seeds are activated by pressing on them with your thumb and forefinger to stimulate the point through acupressure.  From time-to-time I may send the patient home with ear seeds as a continuation of treatment.  The ear seeds will eventually fall out of their own accord and are harmless.

It is based on the belief that the outer area of the ear can work as a representative microcosm of the entire body.

Cupping Therapy

Sterile cups are used to create suction on the skin using the cupping technique.

Cupping focuses on circulation and regulating blood flow, the suction caused by the cups helps to release connective tissue under skin and around muscles, encourages fresh blood flow to the area thereby improving cirulation.  Cupping relieves inflammation and pain and releases toxins.

After cupping therapy it is normal for round red marks to be left on the body - the quality of the red marks depends on how much stagnation / tension in the area treated.   There is no cause for concern, these will disappear of their own accord anywhere between 3 - 7 days.

Electrical current is passed safely in a very controlled manner between 2 - 6 carefully selected acupuncture points according to your diagnosis.  It encourages e a quicker response and deeper treatment of the area between the 2 needles this can be muscular or constitutional.

The patient may feel a tingling sensation but no pain - if for example you had a tight muscle it would feel almost as if the muscle is being massaged deeply.
